Use smart strategies to make your small living room feel larger. When carefully planned, a small living room can be both attractive and user-friendly. When you take the time to consider your storage needs and daily lifestyle, you can create a small but smart living room that increases the enjoyment of your home. "Make sure the furniture you choose for your small living room is appropriate for the space," says eco-friendly designer Robin Wilson, CEO of Robin Wilson Home of New York City. "For example, avoid sofas with skirts. You want to go for furniture raised off the floor." A tall lamp that draws your eye up and adds height to the room or a stylish chair with a pop of color or interesting back are other tools Wilson likes to use to make a small living room feel larger and give it personality. Other simple ideas, like going for a space-saving flat-screen TV or a laptop that hides out of the way instead of a stationary desktop computer, keep the area free from clutter and allow traffic flow in and out of the room. But try to resist the urge to use only small pieces in your small living room. Instead, consider an oversized chair that gives unexpected scale to the space, suggests San Francisco interior designer Jonathan Rachman. "Oversized wall art also expands the room," says Rachman. "Doing an accent wall color stretches and deepens the room. You can use a complementary color or something that offers contrast: You can have three walls neutral and then take that same color and use the deepest version of that color for the accent wall." Creating the illusion of more space is the way to go, believes Rachman. A great area rug can be used to mark a seating area, or you can paint a pattern, like chevron stripes, on your hardwood floor to create borders to help the room feel more spacious. And just because you have a sofa doesn‘t mean you have to have a standard coffee table. "In a small living room, you can use ottomans or stools that move out of the way when you need the space," says Rachman. "Just make sure to consider how you need that room to function and if there are any special requirements. For example, if you need a pullout sofa for guests." Think about traffic flow when you arrange furniture, but avoid placing all the pieces in one corner of the room. Also consider pulling your sofa away from the wall. This simple move gives you space to add a console table that offers open storage and a place for displaying your favorite collectibles.

This living room was done in Scandinavian style and several pastel touches. Scandinavian style is very popular for décor today but sometimes it looks a bit cold and uncomfortable. This living room is none of that kind, it looks cool, warm and even a bit cheerful. Let’s have a closer look at it to catch some details and get inspired. The living room is spacious and includes not only a living space but also a dining one and a playroom for the kids. Scandinavian style supposes lots of light and light shades, so the walls were painted white, and the original oak floor was restored. It was sanded, painted and refinished, so the wood grain was still visible. The original large window was also restored to flood the room with light. The fireplace divided the space into two parts: a living room and a dining room. Such a bright and light-filled room often looks a bit cold, so the designers opted for pastel furniture and décor. The furniture is modern, simple, partly from IKEA, which is a symbol of timeless Nordic décor. Pastel pillows, banners, chairs, wall and fireplace décor spruced up a cold space and turned it into an inviting one. There’s a teepee in the corner, which is a favorite space for the kids to play, and a cool glass cabinet filled with colorful toys. The dining zone features a large shelving unit and a dining table with chairs.

Many small living room ideas revolve around tricking the eye into making the area appear more spacious. Such strategies can transform an area that feels cramped and claustrophobic into one that feels cozy and aesthetically pleasing. Decorate in a way that maximizes light and space, and pay attention to how you use color, scale and weight. It can make quite a difference. It’s interesting to try new things. Sometimes traditional ideas about living room decor aren’t the best solution for a small space. Instead of using blinds for window treatments, use long, flowing drapes because they draw attention to vertical space, thus expanding the area of the room. Your living room, regardless of size, should be able to function as a space for relaxation and entertaining. Here are some of our favorite ways to make it feel more spacious. Designers often place mirrors strategically in small places in order to make them feel larger. One of the most common small living room ideas is to hang a large mirror in a central location to create a focal point. To reflect light and add a nice ambiance, put it behind a light source such as a candle or pendant lamp. If possible, position a mirror across from your window so it will reflect the view and give the illusion of another window. A room has a vertical dimension as well as a horizontal one. If your living room has a high ceiling, make the most of the extra space by decorating it in a manner that draws the eye upward. Floor-to-ceiling drapes are a stylish way to accomplish this goal. Another idea is to fill the vertical space with a menagerie of small to midsize artwork. This technique will make the room feel larger than it actually is, because it invites the eye to roam beyond the eye-level horizontal space that may feel confined. Neutrals and wood tones. One of the most popular small living room ideas is the use of neutral colors on walls, floor, ceiling and furniture upholstery. A palette of off-whites or beiges will expand the space by appearing to push back the walls. Soft hues also tend to illuminate a room by reflecting light. In addition to enlarging an area, a neutral palette imparts instant sophistication and creates a calming environment. When you shop for furniture, consider its visual weight. This concept refers to the perceived heaviness of an object based on size, color and design. Pick out pieces that have a lightweight appearance, as heavier ones will seem to constrict a space. Opt for pale colors over darker ones, and select pieces that have legs while avoiding those that are boxy. Glass coffee or end tables will take up less visual space than wooden ones because you can see through them. Any furnishings that don’t obstruct views will make an area seem more open. A list of small living room ideas would not be complete without the recommendation to select furniture that won’t overpower the room or appear to dominate the space. A sofa with thin arms and a tightly upholstered back is preferable to one with substantial arms and a multi-cushion back. If space is tight, you could do without a couch completely, either choosing a loveseat or opting to position four chairs around a coffee table. When picking out chairs, consider armless ones because they will take up less space than a model with arms. What are your favorite ideas for making your small living room look larger?

Top Living Room Flooring Options, learn the pros and cons of wood, stone, concrete and carpet, along with buying tips. Before a room can be decorated, furnished or even just moved into, it must have a substantial floor. When chosen with care, the best flooring options will set the stage for many years of good looks, durability and comfort. When selecting flooring, a little homework goes a long way. You will want to take into account the style of the house, the budget, the amount of wear-and-tear you anticipate it will need to withstand, and the look and feel you want to create. From standard wood flooring to stone or concrete, living room flooring options are plentiful and offer a range of pros and cons. Architect Bob Wetmore of Cornerstone Architects says that as styles evolve, so do our options. "With the developing soft contemporary movement, we frequently design stained concrete floors or a clean-engineered wood floor," he says. "We also enjoy using cork floors that are very resilient to walk on and warm on the feet during the winter." One of the benefits of working with a trusted architect or contractor is that he or she can quickly help you narrow down your options. But whether you are going it alone or enlisting in the services of a professional, experts agree upon one thing: Do not make a decision based on a small sample in a showroom. See how it looks on a grander scale. "Compare samples side by side and to try to see the product in an actual installation," says architect Robert Tuthill. "Seeing a floor as a complete composite is sometimes much different than how it appears as a small sample." And then, of course, once you have chosen the materials, proper installation is key. A firm, stable, substantial floor should feel that way. In living rooms in particular, a decorative rug will likely anchor the furnishings, but the flooring materials are the foundation that the rest of the room depends upon. Here are the pros and cons for the most popular living room flooring options. When remodeling an older home, good fortune sometime smiles upon those brave enough to pull back a corner of a tattered old carpet: There might be pristine hardwoods underneath, which often can be sanded, stained and sealed. With plenty of choices in stain color, the floor and the room as a whole can feel remarkably refreshed, polished and updated with minimal effort and expense. No large crews of workers, no shopping for expensive materials. It can be incredibly satisfying to do so much with so little. But what if your hardwood floors have damage or need to be extended? A practical and economical option is to match them. "Make use of what you have," advises architect Carol Sundstrom. "If you already have hardwood, consider matching and refinishing. I prefer large continuous areas of one material rather than a different flooring material in each room, which reminds me of a patchwork quilt." And if you need to start from scratch, you can broaden your horizons a bit. There are hardwood options that can be fitted into your space while bringing a sense of age and patina. "We love the warmth of reclaimed heart-pine flooring," says Jane Frederick, of Frederick + Frederick Architects. "It is sustainable because it is reused from old beams removed from buildings being torn down. The boards are wide — 8 inches to 12 inches — and the patina is wonderful." Though wall-to-wall carpeting in bedrooms is still a popular choice, in living rooms, not so much. "I generally never use wall-to-wall carpet in high-traffic or public areas unless my client specifically asks for it," says designer Rachel Oliver. "It is usually less expensive than hardwoods and many styles are easy to keep clean, but it can soak up odors and liquids in high-traffic areas and may stain." Oliver, however, has a trick for taking advantage of the cozy feel that wall-to-wall carpeting provides: In addition to the rugs she likes to scatter about a space, she sometimes has carpeting cut and bound to the exact size needed for a room — it provides all the comfort of carpeting but can be easily removed and cleaned or swapped out. As for getting the size just right, Oliver recommends floating a large carpet 12 to 24 inches from the perimeter of the room. "It offers a uniform, clean look," she says. "The right rug can offer a high-end look in any home, no matter the price," she says. "There are even many indoor/outdoor rugs that are soft enough for babies and kids to play on. Natural jute, seagrass and sisal rugs are hugely popular, but can be harsh on bare feet." "Stone has a strong, tailored feel that tends to work in public spaces," says Robert Tuthill. Stone flooring is not only desirable for certain architectural styles (think grand Old World rooms or spacious modern expanses), it can be entirely appropriate and elegant and, in some cases, relatively locally sourced. With its natural tones and unique characteristics formed eons ago under the surface of the earth, stone flooring can be a sophisticated, one-of-a-kind and very durable option. It can also be one of the more costly options. Using natural stone, such as marble, slate, travertine or limestone, will require careful installation. Cracking, chipping and staining can be some of the pitfalls if the area is not carefully prepped, depending on the type of stone used. Remember, stone flooring will be cool in warm climates and downright chilly in cold climates. Minimalism and the appeal of industrial-chic options make the use of concrete a surprisingly popular option for indoor living spaces, where concrete flooring has moved beyond the garage and into the house. Painting, staining, scoring and polishing — just a few of the options available — enable an existing concrete slab to be transformed rather dramatically while also fairly cost-effectively. These floors can withstand just about anything, but the reverse is also true: Not much can withstand them. If you drop something on a concrete floor, chances are it will suffer. There is no give in this material, but in living rooms, where we are not often on our feet, it might not be such a concern. Also, "concrete floors, by nature, reflect sound," says Bob Wetmore, who advises that the placement of rugs and sound-absorbing materials such as drapery and furniture should be carefully considered. "But the pros for concrete floors are their durability and practicality. Using the right sealers, they generally only require a damp mop to clean." Whether you choose the warmth and patina of hardwoods, the elegance of stone, the modernity of concrete, or another type of floor that speaks to you and the architecture of your home, weigh the pros and cons and get expert advice. And in the end, if you make a choice you regret, throw a rug over it. Chances are, you were going to do that anyway.
